In 2014, Maryland became the 21st state to legalize medical cannabis when Governor O’Malley signed House Bill 881 into law, and also became the 18th state to decriminalize cannabis possession. The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission and the Maryland Department of Health were then tasked with developing regulations for patient registry, i.d. cards, licensing, and all others pertaining to the Maryland Medical Cannabis Program.

Positive Energy first began taking form when Denise and Matt (Ocean City locals and business owners for 30+ years) first heard of the Maryland bill that legalized the use of medical cannabis. They mentioned the idea of applying for a license to their daughter, Lyndsey. They began researching the plant and were astonished with the therapeutic benefits that cannabis had on many medical conditions. The family was especially impassioned with the hope that it could offer a better quality of life for Matt’s father, who had battled Parkinson’s disease for almost 30 years.

During the application phase, they worked meticulously to build a strong, local team and consulted seasoned cannabis professionals in other legalized states. The waiting process was arduous, but all came to fruition on December 9, 2016 when Positive Energy was awarded a license.

From that point forward, Lyndsey and Denise stepped forward as the owners/operators and put forth an enormous amount of effort to bring the dispensary to full operation. Over the years, Positive Energy grew as the patient population it served grew and expanded while overcoming unique challenges.

On July 1, 2023, Positive Energy opened its doors to welcome 21+ adult consumers, which only furthered the normalization of this amazing plant.

The logo was inspired by an untrimmed bud. The small leaves around the bud are often referred to as the 'sugar leaves.'

Excite. We are living in an incremental point in history in that a plant that has been used as an ancient medicine for over 2,000 years; was prescribed as a medicine in the U.S. for 75 years; and has been unjustly prohibited for the past century is now being reintroduced to society. Cannabis has been used as a weapon for division by race and social status, for imprisonment, and for unethical personal gain.

We are working to change the conversation about cannabis to help end the stigma.

Educate. Prohibition has not been kind to neither public nor private knowledge on cannabis, but the 1992 discovery of the Endocannabinoid System documents a huge, medical breakthrough and confirmed that we have much to learn about cannabinoids. Education on cannabinoids and how they interact with our body to maintain a healthy balance is of utmost importance. Learning about different strains and methods of consumption helps patients tailor medical cannabis to both their body and their lifestyle..

Empower. We are able to have a relationship with our medicine--an all natural option--and choose how we wish to consume it. Having a choice, knowing how this medicine interacts with our bodies, and deciding how we want to feel is empowering. By pairing cannabis with a holistic health approach, we empower not only our bodies, but also our minds. The connection between the mind and body can be rediscovered and help realize a new, conscious level of health.
